Behavior Health Technicians (BHT)
Reports To: Directly to Shift Supervisor on Duty and/or Program Coordinator
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED. Must be 21 years or older. Clear criminal background check. Pass training requirements. Able to demonstrate excellent oral and written communications, able to work effectively with all staff members. Display honesty, integrity, and a commitment to the mission of Coastal Autism Academy. Must have one year of experience in population to be serving in at Coastal.
Status eligibility: Full Time 12 hour shifts: 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am; set schedule
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise closely and maintain accountability of children/residents/residents to ensure their safety
- Promote the health and well being of all CAA children/residents
- Report and document any accidents/injuries, unusual behaviors/incidents, emergency safety interventions or critical incidents of children/residents
- Report any suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of any adolescent/resident to Administrative Staff
- Assist and teach children/residents daily living skills to maximize abilities and promote independence Daily living skills include but are not limited to – bathing, toileting, tooth brushing, dressing, eating, shampooing and brushing hair, shaving and nail clipping
- Assist children/residents with dressing appropriately
- Understand dietary meals and follow menu set forth/posted
- Will be trained to pass meds to Residents
- Ensure children/residents receive medications as prescribed and as scheduled
- Know and consistently follow children/residents’ Behavior Support/Comprehensive Care/Residential Treatment Plans
- Implement children/residents’ Life Skills and Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
- Implement Behavior Management/Modification techniques with children/residents
- Follow general rules, policies and procedures of Coastal Autism Academy
- Be familiar with and apply Coastal Autism Academy Mission Statement
- Promote the Rights of Children/Residents in Residential Care
- Follow set daily schedule that is posted
- Legibly and accurately consistently chart children/residents’ behaviors on behavior charts
- Legibly and accurately thoroughly document detailed and pertinent information of children/residents on daily summary notes, toileting, seizure and general medication charts
- Interact with and engage children/residents in recreational/leisure activities, daily
- Attend, participate and/or conduct Individual and Group/Recreational/Social Skills Sessions
- Attend and make contributions to children/residents’ programming
- Teach and promote positive social skills to children/residents
- Teach and use communication skills with children/residents
- Ensure safety of child during community outings
- Contact Supervisor immediately during emergency situations Assist children/residents with Family Reunification/Transition and accurately complete Family Reunification Forms
- Assist children/residents with Family Reunification/Transition and accurately complete Family Reunification Forms
- Know emergency procedures (fire, tornado, accident, missing child, etc)
- Attend all required training and meetings
- Provide a clean, safe and comfortable environment to include: classrooms, residence and yard. Report broken equipment/hazards to shift Supervisor on duty
- Maintain client, staff and agency confidentiality and refrain from gossip
- Work as scheduled, arriving on time and staying to the end of shift. Attendance and punctuality are mandatory. Call outs are frowned upon
- Communicate honestly, effectively, courteously and professionally with children/residents and their family members, visitors, co-workers, Supervisors, Care Coordinators and Administrative Staff
- Cell phones not allowed on resident area, kept on vibrate for personal emergencies and no taking recordings/pictures of other employees
- Display positive role model behavior
- Will comply with HIPPA and ensure no taking of videos, pictures of residents, taping conversations of residents and/or resident living areas
- Able to work independently and as a team player
- Train and assist other staff members
- Pass on all necessary information to relief staff
- Follow Dress Code
- Engage in work related activities at all times
- Demonstrate flexibility and perform other duties as assigned
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Must be able to successfully complete and utilize in role, if necessary, all facets/exercise within CPI and First Aid/CPR as a Condition of Continued Employment
- Must be able to change diapers (could be exposed to smells), bathe Residents
- Will be exposed to physical and verbal aggression by children/residents
- Could be cursed at, spit on, screamed at by children/residents
- Working with verbal and non-verbal children/residents with varying stages (moderate to severe) of autism and/or severe intellectual disabilities
- Work environment includes school, residential setting, outside and off campus
- Regularly required to stand, walk, run and sit. Physically able to bend/stoop, squat, push/pull, reach above and below shoulder level
- Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs
- May be requested to transport a Resident, always with another BHT, to school, clinic, etc.
- Must be able to pass all background checks: SC Law Enforcement, Dept. of Social Services Abuse and Neglect, National Sex Offender Register, and the Department of Motor Vehicles
